This collection consists of materials relating to Henry Miller by Elmer Gertz from 1962 to 1975. The papers include correspondence, writings by Gertz and Miller, manuscripts, and newspaper clippings. The papers reflect the relationship between these two men. In the early 1960's, Mr. Gertz came to the defense of Mr. Miller, whose 1934 novel ''Tropic of Cancer'' was finally published in the United States in 1961 by Grove Press, to critical praise but also to accusations of obscenity. By 1964 the Supreme Court ruled that the sale of the novel was protected by the Constitution.

Elmer Gertz (September 14, 1906 - April 27, 2000) was an American lawyer, writer and civil rights activist. During his lengthy legal career he won some high-profile cases, most notably parole for notorious killer Nathan Leopold and the obscenity trial of Henry Miller's novel Tropic of Cancer (novel).
